iFlytek launches Spark (Xinghuo) cognitive model

iFlytek, the Chinese speech-recognition company, launched its Spark (Xinghuo) cognitive model at an event in Hefei. Chairman Liu Qingfeng presented the model as demonstrating seven capabilities — text generation, language comprehension, knowledge question-answering, logical reasoning, mathematics, code generation and multimodal interaction — and announced deployments across education, office productivity, automotive and virtual-customer-service applications.

iFlytek said internal testing across roughly 480 evaluation subtasks showed Spark outperforming ChatGPT on Chinese-language tasks, while trailing it in English, and Liu set a public target of matching ChatGPT’s English performance by October 2023. The company positioned Spark against both ChatGPT and domestic rivals including Baidu’s Ernie Bot and Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen, emphasising Chinese-language and industry-specific strengths built on two decades of speech-technology development and its own data-centre infrastructure.

The launch drove a sharp rise in iFlytek’s stock price, though shares later fell after a separate controversy over the company’s data-privacy practices later in May. Spark was among a wave of large language models launched by Chinese technology companies in the months following ChatGPT’s global reception, alongside Baidu’s Ernie Bot and Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen, as domestic firms raced to field comparable products under increasing government scrutiny of generative AI services.
