Anthropic announced a $450 million Series C funding round, led by Spark Capital with participation from Google, Salesforce Ventures, Sound Ventures, Zoom Ventures, Menlo Ventures and other investors. Spark Capital general partner Yasmin Razavi joined Anthropic’s board as part of the deal. The company did not disclose a valuation in its own announcement; TechCrunch reported a figure above $4 billion, attributed to The Information.

The round marked Google’s second disclosed investment in Anthropic that year: it had already put $300 million into the company that February as part of a cloud-partnership deal, taking roughly a 10% stake. In the Series C, Google appeared alongside a broader syndicate rather than as lead, and Salesforce and Zoom’s venture arms marked Anthropic’s first funding from enterprise software companies with a commercial interest in embedding Claude into their own products.

Anthropic said the capital would support continued research into “helpful, honest and harmless” AI systems and the scaling of Claude, without giving further detail on planned compute spend. The raise came four months before Amazon’s much larger commitment of up to $4 billion that September, part of a run of successively larger deals through 2023 as Anthropic’s reported valuation climbed from single-digit billions to the tens of billions by year end.
