Elon Musk’s xAI, launched four months earlier with a stated mission to “understand the true nature of the universe,” unveiled its first product: a chatbot called Grok. The company gave a small group of users access from 4 November, with wider availability promised to subscribers of X’s Premium+ tier, priced at $16 a month, once the model left early beta.

Grok’s distinguishing feature was real-time access to posts on X, letting it answer questions about current events that a model trained on a fixed dataset could not. xAI said the underlying model, Grok-1, was trained on web data through the third quarter of 2023 with additional feedback from human “AI tutors,” and reported that it beat other models in its compute class on standard benchmarks — a claim made by the company itself rather than independently verified at launch.

Musk framed Grok’s personality as its point of difference from ChatGPT and other rivals, describing “a bit of wit” and “a rebellious streak” and saying it would answer “spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” while still declining some sensitive queries. The positioning matched Musk’s earlier public criticism of what he called “woke” bias in other companies’ models, turning a stylistic choice into a marketing pitch aimed at users who felt underserved by more cautious competitors.

Grok’s early capabilities lagged the frontier labs it was measured against, and reviewers noted the real-time X access was as much a product hook — tying the chatbot to Musk’s other platform — as a technical advance. The model line continued through further versions, with Grok 3 arriving in February 2025 as xAI’s first release built for extended reasoning, establishing the company as a fourth serious entrant in the reasoning-model race.
