English-language Wikipedia editors reached consensus on a new criterion for speedy deletion, designated G15, allowing administrators to remove pages showing clear signs of unreviewed large-language-model output without the usual week-long deletion discussion. 404 Media reported that the rule was adopted on 4 August 2025, following pressure from volunteer editors who said the existing process could not keep pace with the volume of machine-generated submissions.
The criterion targets specific, mechanical tells rather than a general judgement of writing quality: phrases that address the reader directly, such as “Here is your Wikipedia article on…” or self-referential lines like “as a large language model,” and fabricated or nonsensical citations — invalid ISBNs, dead links, or references unrelated to the article’s subject. Wikipedia’s own policy page cautions that subjective impressions of “AI-sounding” prose are not sufficient grounds on their own; ambiguous cases still go through ordinary deletion discussion, and editors are encouraged to fix salvageable articles rather than delete them.
Ilyas Lebleu, a member of WikiProject AI Cleanup — a volunteer group formed in December 2023 to identify unsourced or hallucinated AI content — told 404 Media that “the ability to quickly generate a lot of bogus content is problematic if we don’t have a way to delete it just as quickly,” but also described the new rule as a stopgap rather than a solution to the underlying volume problem.
The policy marks a shift from Wikipedia’s earlier approach — manual review by a dedicated project — to a codified, mechanical fast-track built into the encyclopedia’s own governance, treating unreviewed AI text as a category of vandalism rather than merely a quality issue to be edited over time.
