OpenAI announced $110 billion in new investment led by Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank, valuing the company at $730 billion pre-money and roughly $840 billion post-money — reported as the largest private funding round on record, more than double OpenAI’s previous raise a year earlier. Amazon committed the largest single share, $50 billion, split into an initial $15 billion and a further $35 billion contingent on OpenAI meeting future milestones. Nvidia and SoftBank each committed $30 billion.
The round came bundled with commercial arrangements rather than as investment alone. OpenAI said it would draw on roughly 2 gigawatts of computing capacity built around Amazon’s own Trainium chips, and that Amazon Web Services would become the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, the company’s enterprise platform for building and deploying AI agents — extending Amazon’s compute relationship with OpenAI beyond its role as an investor. The companies also said OpenAI models would run in Amazon Bedrock through a new stateful runtime environment, that OpenAI would build custom models for Amazon’s consumer applications, and that Amazon’s existing AWS commitment to OpenAI would expand from $38bn to $138bn. OpenAI and Microsoft issued a joint statement the same day saying the new arrangement left their existing relationship unaffected: Azure remained the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI’s stateless API business, and Microsoft kept its exclusive licence to OpenAI’s intellectual property.
The raise reflected both surging demand for OpenAI’s products and the scale of capital now required to build frontier AI infrastructure, with three of the largest technology and telecoms investors in the world each taking a stake within a single round. It stood as OpenAI’s largest funding round to date for barely a month: the company closed a substantially larger round at a higher valuation at the end of March.
