Anthropic launches the Anthropic Institute, led by Jack Clark

Anthropic announced the launch of the Anthropic Institute, a policy- and research-focused unit intended, in the company’s words, to “confront the most significant challenges that powerful AI will pose to our societies.” It is led by Jack Clark, an Anthropic co-founder who had previously headed the company’s policy work.

Rather than a new function built from scratch, the Institute consolidates three existing internal groups — the Frontier Red Team, which stress-tests model capabilities; Societal Impacts, which studies how Claude is used in practice; and Economic Research, which tracks the technology’s labour-market effects — and adds new efforts on forecasting AI progress and on AI’s interaction with legal systems. Named hires included a Yale Law School fellow to lead work on AI and the rule of law, and a University of Virginia economist to study how increasingly capable AI could reshape economic activity.

Anthropic framed the Institute’s position as distinctive because it sits inside a frontier lab rather than outside one, giving it access to model behaviour and deployment data that external researchers lack, while stating an intention to engage publicly with workers, industries and communities affected by the technology. The launch extended a pattern among frontier labs of building in-house institutions to study and communicate the consequences of their own products, alongside their commercial and safety functions.
