OpenAI agreed to acquire Ona, a roughly 79-person startup formerly known as Gitpod that builds secure, persistent cloud development environments. The deal brings Ona’s team and technology into OpenAI’s Codex effort, giving the coding assistant self-hosted sandboxes in which agents can keep running for hours or days after a developer stops actively supervising them, with governance and access controls aimed at enterprise deployment.
Neither company disclosed deal terms; industry analysts estimated the price in the range of $450–500 million against Ona’s roughly $7 million in 2025 revenue. OpenAI said Codex had passed 5 million weekly users, up around 400% since earlier in 2026, and Ona’s chief executive said weekly agent sessions on its platform had grown thirteenfold in production use since the start of the year across enterprise clients including major financial institutions.
The acquisition extends a pattern among frontier labs of buying infrastructure companies to support longer-running, more autonomous coding agents rather than building comparable sandboxing and persistence layers from scratch, as agentic coding tools moved from single-session assistants toward systems expected to work unattended across a codebase for extended periods.
