Tino Cuéllar joins Anthropic as first Chief Global Affairs Officer
Former California Supreme Court Justice and Carnegie Endowment president Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar becomes Anthropic's first Chief Global Affairs Officer, leaving his post as an Anthropic Long-Term Benefit Trust trustee.

Anthropic announced that Mariano-Florentino “Tino” Cuéllar had joined as its first Chief Global Affairs Officer, a newly created role leading the company’s policy work, international engagement and government relationships. Cuéllar came from the presidency of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and had previously served as a justice of the California Supreme Court, where he wrote on technology, privacy and constitutional questions; he is also a Stanford Law School professor and a senior fellow at Stanford’s AI institute.
The appointment carried a governance wrinkle: Cuéllar had been a trustee of Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust — the body designed to oversee the company’s mission independent of its shareholders — since January 2026, and stepped down from that trustee role to take the executive position. Anthropic said Cuéllar would work to build relationships with heads of state and policy leaders as the company sought to shape how governments respond to advancing AI capability.
The hire fit a pattern among frontier labs of recruiting senior figures from law, government and international policy into newly created public-affairs roles, as the industry’s relationship with regulators became a standing part of its business rather than an occasional concern.
