Anthropic launches free Claude for Teachers for US K-12 schools
Districts enrolling by June 2027 get a year of free Enterprise-tier access, with a pilot evaluation this autumn in Detroit Public Schools.

Anthropic made Claude for Teachers free for US K-12 schools and districts, extending an individual-educator programme launched the previous month to whole school systems at Enterprise-tier access with no seat cost. Organisations that enrol by 30 June 2027 receive a full year of free access, with administrators given centralised controls including single sign-on and domain claiming.
The offering came with a school- and district-level data processing agreement aligned with FERPA, and Anthropic said data submitted through a school’s workspace is not used to train its models. The company is piloting an evaluation of the product in Detroit Public Schools this autumn, studying effects on educator workload and instructional practice, and published two new “skills” for lesson preparation and standards-aligned assessment as open-source resources.
The launch came two days after OpenAI expanded its own ChatGPT for Teachers programme and published usage data on classroom use of its chatbot, placing the two companies in direct competition for free adoption inside US public schools — a market where neither is yet charging, and where the commercial return is a bet on habit formation ahead of eventual monetisation.
