Cognition

Autonomous software-engineering agents (Devin); later acquirer of the Windsurf coding tool.

Reference profile

Cognition is a US startup, founded in 2023, that builds autonomous software-engineering agents. It drew wide attention in 2024 with Devin, which it billed as the first "AI software engineer" — a system meant to take a coding task and carry it through to a working result rather than only suggesting completions — though independent testers reported its success rate on real tasks was well short of the marketing. In July 2025 it acquired the coding tool Windsurf, after a planned OpenAI deal collapsed and Google hired away Windsurf's leadership. It was reported at a valuation of around $10.2bn in September 2025 and raised again in 2026 at a figure reported near $26bn.
