Coordinates AI governance among industrial democracies, notably through the Hiroshima AI Process and its voluntary code of conduct for advanced AI.

The G7 — the grouping of seven large industrial democracies plus the European Union — has become a venue for coordinating AI governance among like-minded economies. Under Japan's 2023 presidency it launched the Hiroshima AI Process, which by December 2023 produced a set of international guiding principles and a voluntary code of conduct for organisations developing advanced AI systems, among the first multilateral texts aimed specifically at frontier models. The code is non-binding and its take-up is tracked through a reporting framework run by the OECD. As with other G7 output, its weight is diplomatic rather than legal: it sets shared expectations that member states then translate into their own rules.
