GovAI
An Oxford-linked research non-profit studying the governance of advanced AI — frontier-model regulation, corporate governance and security implications.
GovAI — the Centre for the Governance of AI — is a research non-profit that studies how advanced artificial intelligence should be governed. It began in 2016 and grew into a centre within Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute before spinning out as an independent organisation in 2021, and it remains closely tied to the University of Oxford. Led by Ben Garfinkel, with Allan Dafoe as founding director, it produces academic research and reports on frontier-model regulation, corporate governance and the security implications of AI, and runs a fellowship that has trained many people now working in AI policy. Its output is papers and analysis rather than products, and its influence rests on shaping how researchers and officials frame governance questions.
