Autonomous driving; began with delivery vehicles and now licenses its "Nuro Driver" system.
Nuro is a US autonomous-vehicle company founded in 2016 by Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu, two engineers who had worked on Google's self-driving project. It first built small driverless pods designed to carry goods rather than people, and its R2 delivery vehicle was the first to win a federal regulatory exemption in the United States. After years of narrow deployment, the company shifted strategy to license its self-driving system — the "Nuro Driver" — to carmakers and fleet operators rather than run its own delivery service. A 2025 funding round valued it at about $6bn, below its 2021 peak of $8.6bn, reflecting the harder financing climate the wider autonomous-vehicle sector has faced.
