Tsinghua University, in Beijing, is widely regarded as China's leading university for artificial-intelligence research. It founded a dedicated Institute for Artificial Intelligence in 2018, chaired by the Turing Award laureate Andrew Chi-Chih Yao and led by the academician Bo Zhang, and in 2024 added a separate School of Artificial Intelligence. Its labs and alumni have seeded much of China's large-model industry — several of the research groups and companies behind the country's most prominent models trace back to Tsinghua faculty and graduates — making the university a recurring name in accounts of China's AI capability.
