Allen & Overy announced an exclusive launch partnership making Harvey, a legal-AI tool built on OpenAI’s models, available to more than 3,500 lawyers across 43 offices — the first firm-wide rollout of a generative-AI assistant by a major law firm. Harvey was backed by the OpenAI Startup Fund and had been running in beta at the firm since November 2022, generating roughly 40,000 queries during the trial.

The tool was pitched as an assistant for tasks including contract analysis, due diligence, litigation support and regulatory-compliance research, working across languages and practice areas. David Wakeling, who led A&O’s markets innovation group, said it delivered “unprecedented efficiency,” while the firm’s announcement was explicit that “output needs careful review by an A&O lawyer” — Harvey was positioned as augmenting associates’ work rather than replacing their judgment, a framing law firms adopting similar tools would repeat.

The deal made A&O the most visible early corporate customer for a GPT-4-based product, ahead of GPT-4’s own public release the following month, and it turned Harvey into the reference case for “AI inside professional services” coverage through 2023. Coverage of the firm-wide deployment dates the announcement to mid-February; A&O’s own release carries an early-February date, a discrepancy of roughly two weeks between sources describing the same partnership.

Harvey went on to raise substantial venture funding and sign further law-firm and corporate legal-department customers, becoming one of the best-known “vertical AI” startups built on top of a frontier lab’s models rather than its own.
