Mistral AI closed a €385 million (about $415 million) Series A round led by Andreessen Horowitz, TechCrunch reported, valuing the six-month-old company at roughly $2 billion. Returning investor Lightspeed Venture Partners took part again, alongside new backers including Salesforce, BNP Paribas, CMA-CGM, General Catalyst, and individual investors Elad Gil and Conviction’s Sarah Guo.
The round came less than six months after Mistral’s €105 million seed round, itself reported as the largest seed round in European tech history, and roughly doubled the company’s valuation from the roughly $260 million mark set at seed stage to $2 billion. Chief executive Arthur Mensch framed the raise around building “a European champion with a global vocation in generative artificial intelligence,” pursued through an open, decentralised approach to the technology — language that continued to distinguish Mistral’s pitch from closed-weight rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
The financing closed in the same week that Mistral released Mixtral 8x7B, an open-weight mixture-of-experts model distributed by torrent link, giving investors a concrete technical release to point to alongside the round. Mistral returned to market six months later with a €600 million Series B at around $6 billion, roughly tripling its valuation again in the time between the two rounds.
