Sexual deepfakes of Taylor Swift spread on X

Sexually explicit, AI-generated images of Taylor Swift circulated widely on X and 4chan in late January 2024, with one post reported to have been viewed more than 47 million times before it was taken down. Swift’s fans organised a counter-campaign, flooding her name with unrelated posts to bury the images in search results, and on 27 January X temporarily blocked searches for “Taylor Swift” entirely, restoring them two days later once the platform judged the material had been sufficiently removed.
The images appeared to have been generated using widely available image-synthesis tools, and copies continued circulating on Reddit, Meta’s platforms and Telegram even after X’s intervention. The incident was not the first celebrity deepfake case, but Swift’s fame and the scale and speed of the spread made it the most widely covered to date, and it landed in the middle of a US election year already anxious about synthetic media.
The White House press secretary called the images “alarming” and urged Congress to act, and within days a bipartisan group of senators — Dick Durbin, Lindsey Graham, Amy Klobuchar and Josh Hawley — introduced the DEFIANCE Act, creating a federal civil right of action letting victims of non-consensual sexual deepfakes sue anyone who knowingly produced or distributed the images. It passed later in 2024. The episode was also cited during debate on the subsequent TAKE IT DOWN Act, which added criminal penalties and a platform takedown requirement and was signed into law the following year.
The case became a reference point in arguments that platform moderation alone could not contain synthetic non-consensual imagery once generation tools were cheap and widely available, reinforcing the case for statutory liability reaching the people who made and spread the material rather than relying solely on after-the-fact removal.
