OpenAI and News Corp signed a multi-year global licensing agreement covering current and archived content from News Corp’s publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch and the New York Post in the US, The Times and The Sun in the UK, and The Australian and other titles in Australia. Under the deal, OpenAI gained permission to display News Corp content in response to user queries and to use it to improve its products, including training.
Neither company disclosed financial terms, but reporting attributed to the Wall Street Journal put the deal’s value at more than $250 million over five years, which outlets covering it described as the largest AI content-licensing agreement in publishing to that point.
The agreement was one of a growing list of licensing deals OpenAI struck with publishers — including the Financial Times, Reddit and Dotdash Meredith — a strategy that contrasted with the New York Times’ decision, months earlier, to sue OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement rather than negotiate a licence. The News Corp deal effectively let OpenAI point to voluntary licensing as evidence that compensating publishers was compatible with its business, even as the litigated alternative proceeded in parallel.
