Sam Altman published an essay arguing that AI development had already passed the point of no return: “we are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started,” he wrote, framing the transition not as a sudden rupture but as a gradual process in which “wonders become routine” and society adapts as it did to earlier technological shocks. It was the latest in a sequence of public essays through which Altman had laid out his view of AI’s trajectory, following “The Intelligence Age” in 2024.
