Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a long essay responding to “AI 2027,” the widely discussed scenario forecast in which a single leading AI project rapidly outpaces all rivals and, in one of its two endings, disempowers humanity. Buterin argued the scenario’s central asymmetry — one actor’s capabilities racing to “godlike” levels while everyone else’s stay roughly static — was implausible given the scenario’s own premise that AI progress would be rapid and broadly diffused.
His central argument concerned defence rather than offence. If the strongest AI system could develop capabilities dramatic enough to remake the physical world by 2030, he wrote, “the second-strongest AI can install sensors and filters in buildings by 2030” just as fast. Applied to bioweapons specifically, he pointed to defensive technologies already emerging — improved air filtration, real-time pathogen detection, immune-system enhancement — arguing that cybersecurity and biodefence both tend toward a “defense-favoring endgame” once enough capable actors work the problem. He extended this into a multipolar argument: rather than one controller acquiring unchecked power, multiple AI systems under different controllers would develop competing capabilities that deter unilateral aggression.
Buterin framed his own position as “techno-optimism” grounded in trend extrapolation rather than dismissal of AI risk — he took AI 2027’s capability trajectory broadly seriously while rejecting its concentration-of-power mechanism. As a prominent technologist writing from outside AI-safety research, his response became one of several notable published critiques of the scenario, part of a wider argument through 2025 over how much weight to put on specific fast-takeoff timelines.
