OpenAI launched OpenAI for Healthcare, a suite of products built on its GPT-5.2 models and aimed at hospitals and health systems, offering HIPAA compliance and business associate agreements alongside role-based access controls for governing AI use across clinical, research and administrative teams. Within the same launch OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Healthcare, intended to let clinical staff synthesise medical evidence alongside institutional guidance for a specific patient’s context, draft clinical and administrative documentation, and adapt patient-facing materials for readability or translation, and a related free tool, ChatGPT for Clinicians, aimed at physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists.
OpenAI said health data processed through the new products would not be used to train its models, and that outputs synthesising medical evidence would carry citations back to source material rather than presenting conclusions unsupported. The company said the products were already deployed at a number of major US health systems, including AdventHealth, Baylor Scott & White Health, Boston Children’s Hospital, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, HCA Healthcare, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, and the University of California, San Francisco.
The launch put OpenAI in more direct competition with clinical-AI specialists such as OpenEvidence, which some of the same hospital systems had already adopted, and extended a broader push by frontier labs into vertical, regulated markets where compliance requirements and integration with existing institutional workflows — rather than raw model capability — determine adoption.
