OpenAI said healthcare organisations could connect their Epic electronic health record systems to ChatGPT for Healthcare, giving clinicians read-only access to a patient’s authorised record — appointment notes, lab results, medications and specialist documentation — inside a chat interface rather than across separate systems. The company said the model does not write back to the patient chart.
Alongside the Epic integration, OpenAI introduced a Healthcare Public Data plugin connecting ChatGPT to nine public datasets, including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed, RxNorm and Medicare coverage data, intended to let clinicians pull trial eligibility criteria, drug identifiers and coverage policy without searching each source separately. OpenAI said physicians reviewing ChatGPT’s responses across clinical use cases rated 99.1% as safe, and more than 93% as having “good” or better accuracy against the connected data sources — figures produced by OpenAI’s own evaluation rather than an independent study.
The update builds on OpenAI for Healthcare, launched in January 2026 with deployments at hospital systems including Cedars-Sinai and Memorial Sloan Kettering, and on the free ChatGPT for Clinicians tool. Connecting directly to a widely used EHR vendor moves OpenAI closer to embedding itself in routine clinical workflow, in a market where compliance and integration, rather than raw model capability, have determined which tools hospitals actually adopt.
