OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Clinicians

OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Clinicians, a free tier for verified US-based physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists, built around clinical documentation and research rather than general chat. Clinicians verify their status to sign up, and OpenAI said it planned to extend the offering beyond the US over time.

The product let clinicians turn recurring tasks — referral letters, prior-authorization requests, patient instructions — into reusable “skills,” and added a clinical-search function returning cited answers drawn from peer-reviewed medical sources, aimed at compressing literature reviews that would otherwise take longer. HIPAA support was available through a business associate agreement for eligible accounts, conversations were excluded from model training, and the sign-up flow added multi-factor authentication; OpenAI noted many clinical tasks do not require handling protected health information at all.

The launch followed OpenAI’s broader push into healthcare and came as reported clinician use of ChatGPT had roughly doubled over the preceding year, putting the company in more direct competition with clinician-focused tools such as OpenEvidence. It was one of several vertical- and workplace-specific ChatGPT products OpenAI shipped in the same week, alongside Workplace Agents for ChatGPT Business and the GPT-5.5 model release.
