Google says Gemini has passed 1 billion monthly users

Google said its Gemini app had passed 1 billion monthly active users, calling it the fastest-growing product in the company’s history. Sundar Pichai announced the figure, which TechCrunch reported made Gemini the 14th Google product to reach the billion-user mark and put it roughly two months behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which TechCrunch said had crossed the same threshold in June 2026.

Google’s own post gave usage detail rather than a growth timeline: 63% of users now interact with Gemini by voice, the app generates more than 150 million images a day, and it has passed 100 million active users on iOS despite competing there with Apple’s own assistant integrations. The company also cited figures on how people use it — more than a third of school-related requests include an attached file, and it said parents were more likely than other users to rely on voice for everyday tasks.

The milestone landed six days after Demis Hassabis moved from chief executive of Google DeepMind to a chairman and chief-scientist role, a reshuffle that coverage at the time tied to Gemini’s flagship model having slipped past its planned mid-2026 launch. The billion-user figure measures the consumer app rather than any specific model version, and Google did not break out how much of the growth came from default placement on Android and Pixel devices versus deliberate adoption.
