Apple came to generative AI later and more cautiously than its peers, announcing Apple Intelligence — a set of AI features for the iPhone and its other devices — only in June 2024, with an option to hand harder queries to OpenAI's ChatGPT. Its strategy leant heavily on privacy, keeping processing on the device or in what it calls Private Cloud Compute, but its own models struggled to match rivals and a promised overhaul of the Siri assistant slipped repeatedly. In January 2026 Apple effectively conceded the point, agreeing to pay Google a reported $1bn a year to have Gemini power a rebuilt Siri rather than relying on models built in-house. Its rivalry with OpenAI has also turned adversarial: in mid-2026 Apple sued the lab, accusing it of a campaign to obtain Apple hardware designs as both companies moved into building AI devices.
