Payments company Stripe confirmed it had agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a marketplace and gateway that routes developer requests across more than 400 AI models from over 80 providers, choosing between them by price, speed and reliability. Stripe’s announcement did not disclose financial terms. Bloomberg had reported three days earlier, on 16 August, that the deal was worth more than $7 billion — a figure Stripe did not confirm or deny in its own statement.

That reported price is a large jump from OpenRouter’s own fundraising history: the company had raised $113 million in a Series B round only three months earlier, in May 2026, at a reported valuation of $1.3 billion, with roughly 8 million users at the time. Stripe chief executive Patrick Collison said in the company’s announcement that “tokens are the central currency for companies building with AI” and that the combination would help businesses “maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently.” OpenRouter chief executive Alex Atallah said “intelligence will be multi-model” and that developers “need a neutral layer to orchestrate and manage them all,” describing the deal as a way to “accelerate that mission.” Stripe’s announcement did not specify whether OpenRouter would continue to operate as a standalone product or how its team would be integrated.

The acquisition folds a model-routing layer — infrastructure for choosing and paying for AI inference across competing providers — into a payments company’s existing infrastructure for handling money movement, a pairing Stripe framed as a natural extension of its business as AI spending increasingly flows through per-token pricing. It also marks one of the larger acquisitions of an AI infrastructure startup by a company outside the group of frontier AI labs and major cloud providers.
