Phil Aroneanu launches Irreplaceable, an AI advocacy group
A co-founder of the climate group 350.org launched an organisation casting AI as a fight over who benefits, with three demands: an economy that serves everyone, protected freedoms, and no existentially risky systems.

Phil Aroneanu, who two decades ago helped found the climate-movement group 350.org, launched Irreplaceable, an advocacy organisation pressing for AI to be shaped by the public rather than by technology executives. He framed the moment bluntly:
The era of doing nothing on AI is over.
The group set out three demands: an economy that benefits everyone rather than a handful of large companies, the protection of “essential freedoms” against restrictive systems, and the prevention of existentially dangerous AI. Its organising slogan — “AI will be shaped by whoever shows up” — cast the technology’s direction as a political contest rather than a technical inevitability, citing job displacement, child-safety concerns and the environmental cost of data centres.
Irreplaceable positioned itself as a grassroots, labour-and-public-interest counterweight to the well-funded political operations that have grown up around AI, including pro-industry super PACs — part of a widening 2026 backlash in which data centres and AI’s economic effects had become live electoral issues.
