Mistral and Mozilla bring Mistral to Firefox

Mistral and Mozilla announced a partnership making Mistral Small 4 a selectable model inside Firefox’s “Smart Window”, the browser’s built-in AI assistant, which helps users make sense of complex searches, find pages they navigated away from, and pull information from open tabs.
Smart Window offers a choice of models tuned for different roles — Mistral Small 4 for a “personalised” mode, alongside Gemini and Qwen3 options — and users can switch the default or per-conversation, or connect their own endpoint. Both companies said conversations are not stored on Mozilla’s servers by default, with Mistral committing to zero data retention on its side. The feature launched first in France and North America, with the UK and Germany to follow later in 2026.
The deal gives Mistral a distribution channel inside one of the few remaining independent mainstream browsers, and gives Mozilla a European, privacy-oriented alternative to routing Smart Window entirely through US or Chinese model providers — consistent with Firefox’s positioning against browsers built by companies that also sell advertising or run their own frontier labs.
