Google, Nvidia and Emerald AI launch an energy alliance

Google, Nvidia and the grid-software startup Emerald AI launched the AI Energy Management Alliance, a coalition intended to let data centres flex their electricity use in response to grid conditions rather than drawing power at a constant rate. Around 18 founding and launch members joined, including Anthropic and utilities such as National Grid and RWE, spanning AI developers, chipmakers, data-centre operators and grid operators.

The alliance’s pitch is that data centres willing to pause non-critical workloads or shift compute during periods of grid strain, in exchange for faster and larger grid connections, could unlock as much as 100GW of capacity that would otherwise sit unused because utilities plan for constant peak draw. That figure is the coalition’s own projection, and has not been verified by any grid regulator.

The launch reflects growing pressure on the power grid from AI data-centre construction, and follows a wave of direct deals between AI firms and power generators over the past two years. Whether flexible-load commitments actually translate into faster connection approvals depends on grid operators and regulators who are not themselves alliance members.
