ASML is a Dutch company, founded in 1984 and based in Veldhoven, that makes the lithography machines used to print circuit patterns onto silicon. It is the sole supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, the technology required to manufacture the most advanced chips, which places it upstream of foundries such as TSMC and makes it one of the more important single points in the AI hardware supply chain. Because its machines are essential to cutting-edge production, ASML sits at the centre of US and Dutch restrictions on exporting advanced chipmaking equipment to China.
