Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool — not a model but a command-line agent that runs in the terminal, able to search a codebase, edit files across a project, run tests and commit changes with the developer supervising rather than typing each step. Launched as a research preview in February 2025 and generally available that May, its design was widely imitated, with OpenAI's Codex CLI and Google's Gemini CLI following. Anthropic reported it passing $1 billion in annualised revenue by November 2025, about six months after general release.
