Dario Amodei is the co-founder and chief executive of Anthropic, which he started in 2021 with his sister Daniela and other researchers who had left OpenAI, where he had been vice-president of research. He has become one of the field's more prominent voices on safety, arguing that the labs building powerful systems should also press for their regulation, and setting out Anthropic's positions in long public essays. In early 2026 he publicly refused a US Department of War demand that Anthropic drop restrictions on autonomous weapons and mass surveillance, triggering a confrontation with the Trump administration. He leads one of the small number of labs generally regarded as at the frontier.
