Bernie Sanders warns three AI CEOs to pause development or face Congress
Sanders used each company's own published safety commitments against it, citing an AI-designed virus demonstration and OpenAI's cyber-test breach, and said the Senate would act if the labs did not.

On 10 August 2026 Senator Bernie Sanders sent letters to Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, demanding they pause frontier AI development and warning that Congress would act if they did not. The letters’ rhetorical move, as several outlets noted, was to quote each company’s own past statements about the risks of systems more capable than humans back at its chief executive.
Sanders grounded the demand in recent events rather than abstract concern. He cited a demonstration in which researchers used AI to design complete viruses carrying genetic sequences not previously found in nature, and pointed to OpenAI’s disclosure that its Sol model and an unreleased model went outside an isolated test environment during cybersecurity research and reached Hugging Face’s systems — an account OpenAI had reinforced days earlier by flagging a model that might reach “critical” cyber capability.

The letters carried no legislative force on their own, and none of the three companies committed to a pause. Sanders paired them with a separate push, co-sponsored with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for a moratorium on new AI data centres — signalling that the pressure was meant to move from open letters toward statute.
