Emad Mostaque
Emad Mostaque is the British entrepreneur who founded Stability AI and led it as chief executive through its 2022 emergence as the company behind Stable Diffusion, the image generator whose weights were released openly rather than gated behind an API. That open approach positioned Stability, alongside Meta, as a counterweight to the closed frontier labs. He resigned in March 2024 amid a cash crunch and an exodus of senior researchers, saying afterwards that "you're not going to beat centralized AI with more centralized AI" and that he wanted to pursue more decentralised approaches. His departure raised questions, still unresolved, about whether an open-weight strategy can sustain a well-funded commercial lab.
