Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque resigns

Emad Mostaque resigned as chief executive of Stability AI, the company he founded and had led since its 2022 emergence as the publisher of Stable Diffusion. He said he was stepping down to pursue decentralised approaches to AI development, arguing that “you’re not going to beat centralized AI with more centralized AI” and that “the concentration of power in AI is bad for us all.” Stability’s chief operating officer, Shan Shan Wong, and chief technology officer, Christian Laforte, became interim co-chief executives while the board searched for a permanent replacement.

The resignation followed roughly a year of financial strain at the company. Stability AI had been burning through cash — reported at around $8 million a month as of late 2023 — while an attempt to raise new funding at a $4 billion valuation had failed to close, leaving the company searching for alternative paths to sustainability. It had also lost more than half a dozen senior researchers in recent quarters, most notably a group of core Stable Diffusion contributors who left around the time of Mostaque’s departure and went on to found the rival Black Forest Labs, which emerged from stealth that August.

The episode marked a turning point for a company that had positioned itself, alongside Meta, as the counterweight to closed frontier labs, having built its reputation on releasing Stable Diffusion’s weights openly rather than gating the model behind an API. Mostaque’s departure, coming amid the cash crunch and researcher exodus rather than from strength, raised questions about whether an open-weight strategy could sustain a well-funded commercial lab, questions that recurred through the following two years as other open-weight players weighed the same trade-off between openness and revenue. Stability AI continued operating and releasing models after Mostaque’s exit, but no longer occupied the position at the centre of the open-versus-closed argument that it had held through 2022 and 2023.
