Physical Intelligence
General-purpose foundation models ("π") intended to control many kinds of robot from natural-language instructions.
Physical Intelligence is a San Francisco startup building foundation models for robots — a single AI system meant to control many different machines across many tasks, in the way a language model handles many kinds of text. Founded in 2024 by a group of academic and industry researchers including Karol Hausman, Sergey Levine and Chelsea Finn, it released a model it calls π0 (pi-zero) that takes natural-language instructions and drives robot arms through jobs such as folding laundry and assembling boxes, and later published the model openly. The company has drawn some of the largest robotics funding of the period, reaching a valuation of about $5.6bn in a late-2025 round with backers including Jeff Bezos and OpenAI, though it stresses that reliable general-purpose robot control remains an open research problem.
