Safe Superintelligence
Ilya Sutskever's research company, set up around the single stated goal of a "safe superintelligence" with no plan to sell products along the way.
Safe Superintelligence, usually shortened to SSI, is a research company founded in June 2024 by Ilya Sutskever — OpenAI's former chief scientist — with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, split between Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. It was set up around a single stated aim, reaching what it calls a safe superintelligence, with no plan to sell products or generate revenue along the way — a structure intended to insulate long-term research from the commercial and release pressures Sutskever had cited when leaving OpenAI after the 2023 board crisis. Despite shipping nothing publicly, it has raised billions on the strength of Sutskever's reputation, reaching a reported $32 billion valuation in 2025 and later a large strategic investment and compute deal with Nvidia, making it one of the starkest examples of a lab funded on research credibility rather than a product.
