Taalas
Hardwires trained model weights into dedicated silicon for low-cost, high-speed inference; acquired by AMD in 2026.
Taalas is a Toronto chip startup, founded in 2023, that takes an unusually radical approach to AI hardware: instead of running a model on general-purpose accelerators, it etches the model's trained weights directly into custom silicon, trading flexibility for much cheaper and faster inference. In August 2026 AMD acquired it, planning to pair the technique with its Instinct GPUs.
