AMD
Long-established chipmaker and the main credible challenger to Nvidia in the accelerators used to train and run large models, competing chiefly on memory capacity.
AMD is a long-established American chipmaker and, in AI, the main challenger to Nvidia's near-total grip on the accelerators used to train and run large models. Its Instinct line — the MI300X, MI325X and later MI450 — competes chiefly on memory capacity, on the argument that running big models is increasingly limited by memory rather than raw compute. In October 2025 it signed a multi-year agreement to supply OpenAI with six gigawatts of GPUs, unusually structured with a warrant that could hand OpenAI close to 10% of AMD, one of several interlocking chip-and-equity deals that critics grouped together as evidence of circular financing in the AI build-out. AMD remains well behind Nvidia in market share, but is one of the few credible alternative suppliers at the frontier.
