Trump launches Genesis Mission to accelerate AI-driven science

President Trump signed an executive order launching the “Genesis Mission,” directing the Department of Energy to build what the order calls the American Science and Security Platform: an integrated system combining DOE supercomputers, AI models and decades of accumulated federal scientific datasets, aimed at accelerating research in areas including advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, critical materials, nuclear energy, quantum science and semiconductors. The administration framed the effort explicitly on the model of the Manhattan Project and the Apollo program — a centrally coordinated national push rather than a funding programme distributed across agencies.

The order set a staged timeline rather than a single launch date: DOE was given 60 days to identify at least 20 national science and technology challenges to target, 90 days to inventory available federal computing resources, 120 days to identify usable data and model assets and produce an integration plan, 240 days to review the capacity of robotic laboratories and production facilities, and 270 days to demonstrate an initial working version of the platform, with annual progress reporting thereafter. Implementation authority sat with the DOE Secretary, coordinated through the White House science and technology office, and the order called for DOE to draw in national laboratories, universities, private companies and international research partners under cooperative agreements. The order referenced funding “subject to available appropriations” without specifying an amount at signing.

The Genesis Mission was the clearest statement yet of the second Trump administration’s approach to AI policy on science: rather than new safety-oriented regulation, a large state-directed effort to apply existing frontier AI capability to federal research infrastructure the government already controlled, positioning DOE’s supercomputing and laboratory assets as the country’s competitive advantage in AI-accelerated science.
