IBM is one of the oldest names in computing, founded in 1911 and based in Armonk, New York, and long associated with artificial intelligence through its Watson system, which won the US quiz show Jeopardy in 2011. In the current wave it has pitched itself at businesses rather than consumers: its watsonx platform, launched in 2023, and the Granite family of open foundation models are aimed at enterprise use, and its large consulting arm helps other companies deploy the technology. Led since 2020 by chief executive Arvind Krishna, IBM presents itself as a supplier of "trusted" enterprise AI rather than a competitor at the consumer frontier.
