AI Policy Institute
A US think tank that polls the public on AI and advocates government action on catastrophic risk, widely cited for its opinion surveys.
The AI Policy Institute (AIPI) is a US think tank founded in 2023 by executive director Daniel Colson to research public opinion on artificial intelligence and press for government rules on catastrophic AI risk. It is best known for its polling, frequently cited by lawmakers and journalists, which reports broad public support for AI regulation — including the survey behind the 2026 AI Kill Switch Act finding that 86% of voters wanted a guaranteed shutdown capability. Colson previously co-founded the fintech company Reserve. AIPI has said it was seeded by anonymous donors from the technology and finance industries; reporting has also linked its funding to Open Philanthropy, the grant-maker backed by Dustin Moskovitz and Cari Tuna. It should not be confused with the similarly named AI Policy Network.
