Broadcom
Designs custom AI accelerators (XPUs) and networking silicon for hyperscalers, the leading "build-your-own-chip" alternative to buying general-purpose GPUs.
Broadcom is a US semiconductor and software company, led by Hock Tan, that has become a central supplier of custom AI silicon. Rather than sell general-purpose GPUs, it co-designs bespoke accelerators — which it calls XPUs — and the networking chips that connect them, for hyperscale customers reported to include Google, Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic. In October 2025 it announced a collaboration with OpenAI to deploy 10 gigawatts of custom accelerators, and the company has said its AI-related semiconductor revenue is growing sharply, positioning custom silicon as the main alternative to buying merchant GPUs.
